Tabatha Deans

Bringing Integrity to the Written Word

Settling in

Since, in my own mind, the whole world revolves around me, I didn’t stop to think about how I would have to explain myself to others when I ended up in their little towns until I went boating with kathy yesterday. Of course it was awesome to go boating on a monday afternoon. We met her brother Roger and his wife Carol. Roger used to bang our heads together and tormented us the entire time we were growing up. Thank God Carol drove the boat.

Luckily I had a pair of swim shorts that Missy gave me, so, although I didn’t match I was at least in swimming attire. Roger asked me right off the bat “So, Tabatha, are you lost?”  That took me back a little bit. Although I have a big long explanation for my journey, it seemed inappropriate at the time to explain it, so I just said, “Yeah, I guess I am for a little bit.” Then we got on the boat, then proceeded to get on an innertube and get drug around the lake. We got really wet, Kathy fought me for handles on the tube, and we ended up dunked in Steinaker. It was a great way to throw  me out of my comfort zone and make me do something I wouldn’t normally do. So I’m checking that off my list of things to do in life, even though I didn’t know it was on my list.

Tuesday I took the boys around town looking for t.v.’s. Dustin, 14, and Alex, 10, apparently think that a four person household requires four t.v.’s, with matching dvd players and vcr’s. We went from one end of town to the other, which didn’t take long. We didn’t find any t.v.’s that were affordable. Prices here are a little inflated. Almost everywhere we went had a help wanted sign in the window, so I don’t think finding a job will be too difficult. I’m not seriously looking until next week, after I spend the weekend camping with my brother Tim and his son MItchell, 12.

I spent the better part of day three laying on the swing in Kathy’s backyard, on her lush, green lawn. Unlike Dan and MIssy’s lawn, which was left in my care for three days and ended up brown. But, Dan’s mother Daisy officially said it wasn’t my fault. I laid there just thinking. Not really having anything at all to think about, other than the fact that it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to just lay and think and ponder. In the city there was always something to think about. I remember every friday after finishing my pages for the Tribune each week, I would go home to relax but there were always thoughts going through my head. Would the pages look good? Would the stories turn out great? Where would I come up with stories for next week? When would I get some time off? Or worrying about people.

But honestly, here, nothing goes through my mind other than how green the lawn is, how fluffy the clouds are, how cool the breeze is and whether or not I’ll get rained on while napping on the swing. After napping the afternoon away, I took the clothes off the line, hung out with the boys and watched a movie.

It’s amazing how much more laid back the lifestyle is here than in the city. I can’t remember the last time I hung out with not much to think about or do. But I”ve contacted the local DAV commander and have veterans interviews lined up for next week. I’m also taking my resume to the Vernal Express friday, as well as registering at the local job service and temporary agency.

I initially planned to work with seniors, but after my last 36-hour gig before leaving Salt Lake, I’ve decided that although I love old people, I really want to work at a job that will allow me to meet a lot of different people. So I’m not sure what kind of job I’ll take, but I’m looking forward to learning something new and getting out of my comfort zone.
