Brutal day of playing editor
My day began at 5:00 a.m., when my departing editor, Patrick, retrieved me from the warmth of my home and comfy bed, and drug me to the office for a dry run at being editor. Throughout the week we have already edited nearly 75 pieces, ranging from short obituaries to 1800 word rambling stories submitted by community members. Today is the day we actually lay out and print the paper, so we had to be here to make sure that every story, every cutline and every photo was slugged properly and readily available before 7:30, when we start production. Having been in the office until past midnight last night finishing up stories and making sure everything was edited, I’m running on about 3.5 hours of sleep. I was a little foggy at 5 this morning, but I learned a long time ago to write things down. Actually I learned that while I was working for a scientologist who insisted on “job hats,” a written, step-by-step set of instructions for each job.
So, we successfully got the paper out, and now I’m headed for the local Brew Haus, where we meet each week to discuss our frustrations and embrace our successes!
